Ok so maybe you have taken the test and now you may or may not know if you have GERD. So your ready to know what it is right? GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is when the valve between the esophagus and stomach becomes weak. This valve is called the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter). So you ask what does the LES really do? The LES should remain tightly contracted until food arrives. The LES then relaxes allowing the food to pass. Then once again it closes tightly. This action prevents acid and enzymes from flowing up into your esophagus. When the LES is weak you have GERD along with heartburn and several other symptoms listed on the next page. Click on link titled "Symptoms of GERD" to learn more about the symptoms. | top | |
